This past weekend we had the pleasure of photographing two people who are so in love! I had the honor of shooting with photographer extraordinaire and friend Tom Davis of Northern Images. He jumped in last minute to fill in for a missing assistant...thanks Tom!!! We had an amazing day dodging the rain and getting the most incredible light and sunset! The gorgeous flowers consisted of sunny sunflowers made by Meredith Fancy. The guests danced the night away to the sounds of Accent. And of course the food was impeccably presented by Casual Gourmet. The night was capped off with Gerry and Caroline biking off into the sunset on their tandem bike adorned with more sunflowers! How fun!!!

Sarah and Nick were married this weekend in beautiful Harwichport. We were blessed with a beautiful day! Everything went great as Casual Gourmet did an impeccable job and the party really knew how to dance the night away to the music of Cape Cod DJs. com! The flowers were so pretty with designs from New England Gardens. The lavender accents were especially lovely!

Well, with the end of the school year tomorrow, Keegan's class decided to have an end of the year party and "eat" their way thru the alphabet. Can you guess what letter we got? By the way, there is only one food I could find beginning with X-Xavier-which appears to be a cream soup or consommé thickened with arrowroot or rice flour and garnished with diced chicken. Not real fun for a school party.....so these will have to do! Enjoy-we did!!

Even though Spring is the season, it hardly feels like here on the Cape...although some say that we usually don't really get a Spring here.....I got these beautiful tulips from my lovecat friend Christine from Bello Photography....how I love tulips! Every year our Cape Cod professional photographer group has a contest to see which members will have their images represent the group on the web. Our group has grown very large in the past couple of years and we are now only allowed to enter 2 images each. A portrait and a wedding image. The contest is then voted on by the studios in the organization. This year there was a total of 66 entries and I am proud to say that I received second place in the portrait category and and honorable mention in the wedding category. Pretty cool!

It's Official: Curvy women are smarter

We hope the Nobel Prize committee didn't miss this week's release of a groundbreaking study titled, "Waist-hip ratio and cognitive ability: Is gluteofemoral fat a privileged store of neurodevelopmental resources?"Translation, for the benefit of you size zeroes out there: Are fat-bottomed girls smarter? Answer: Yes. They also have smarter kids, according to researchers at the University of Pittsburgh and the University of California at Santa Barbara.Middle-age women reacted with glee -- "We're getting smarter every day!" -- and men with trepidation. (What's the right answer to the question, "Does this PhD make my butt look big?") Skeptics, most of whom likely tend toward the skinny side, seem to want to file the wider-is-wiser theory with that old baloney about men with bigger noses having bigger, um, noses. We've never seen any empirical evidence on that one.
The data on the brain/butt theory, though, is pretty convincing. In a study of more than 16,000 women, the curvy girls consistently outscored their slender counterparts on cognitive tests. Their kids outscored the skinny moms' kids too. But the researchers don't posit that bigger is automatically better. What matters is the size of the hips relative to the waist. That's because fat stored around the buttocks and thighs is high in omega-3 acids, which promote brain growth, while fat stored around the middle is loaded with omega-6 acids, which make your pants too tight.Women with "pear" or "hourglass" shapes have greater reserves of omega-3, which nourishes their own brains and is essential to fetal brain development in the third trimester of pregnancy.So grab a tape measure, girls, and see how your IQ stacks up. Just divide your waist size by your hip size. The smaller your answer, the better.
Now compare: Your typical runway model, with a 24-inch waist and 34-inch hips, has a waist-hip ratio of .71. Your average size 10, with a 28-inch waist and 39-inch hips, is a .72. Jennifer Lopez, at 26 and 39, is a .67.And therein lies the scholarly merit of this study -- a scientific answer to what we thought was a rhetorical question: Why is J.Lo so hot? Because males have a biological imperative to produce intelligent offspring, that's why. "Men respond because it's reproductively important," explains Pitt's William Lassek, whose next study will no doubt attempt to identify the biological imperative associated with an eye for blonds. But let's not quibble.The great thing about this study is, it lets everyone off the hook. Go ahead and gawk, guys. We know you're just searching for signs of a deep and genetically transferable intellect. And ladies, pass the nachos. Those size 4 jeans would just make you look dumb.

We had a great turn out at our new location-the Hyannis Golf Club. PPOCC is a tremendous asset to the Cape professional photography community for networking and education and I am so proud to be a part of it!!

Just back from attending and presenting at the first annual Manic Mommies Escape Weekend. Held this year in Newport RI. I was lucky to attend with my good friend Lisa and joined by my new friend Hillary. We all presented at Mom University.

Lisa spoke to moms about owning your own business. Check out her site at http://beautifulbenefits.myarbonne.com/, Hillary on food and garden TV as she is a producer of lifestyle television programs for PBS, currently the director of Victory Garden. And me on photographing your children. We had a great time!

The moms came from all over the country. I met women from Texas, Washington, Ohio and Virginia, as well as all over Massachusetts! GM sponsored the event and drove the moms all around as well as let us take test drives in the fleet of cars they brought along!

Nantucket, The White Elephant and Autumn!

Sean and I were able to travel to Nantucket Island this past weekend despite the terrible storm here on the Cape. We went on the High Speed Ferry-only one hour dock to dock. It was the way to travel! Nantucket fared well with the storm, just some minor flooding and minimal power outages. The island was peaceful this time of year and we enjoyed exploring the neighborhoods and the deserted restaurants. I would totally recommend visiting Nantucket this time of year and staying at the White Elephant was the best! 4 stars! I hope you enjoy this slide show done with my point and shoot!

This large wooden painted sign has been appearing at the same place across the street. It has been appearing for the last month and a half on various days and then disappears. I never see anyone haul it to the sidewalk or remove it. (it is quite large) All I can figure that Rick G (it is signed at the bottom) did something terrible, or Kelly has moved or changed jobs and hasn't seen the sign yet or maybe he doesn't know my name is Amy (ha ha lol) but I would love to know the story behind this persistent colorful sign! You go Rick G, I hope Kelly gives you a sign soon!

Had a great weekend last weekend and it all started with the rehearsal dinner for the wedding of Megan and Shannon. In from California they celebrated their rehearsal at the new Casino Wharf in Falmouth Heights. It was a great night for all. They were married on Friday afternoon at Christ The King in Mashpee and then off to the Popponessett Inn. The weather held out and gave us amazing light on the beach! Yesterday was a glorious day here on Cape Cod, so I thought I would take advantage of the wonderful weather and photograph some stock senics. Well low and behold while photographing on Buzzards Bay, I spotted the very reason the body of water got it's name!

Never seen one in the wild before and with a little Google search, it is actually called a Turkey Vulture and not a buzzard. But in America, the term is often employed incorrectly to describe vultures. This probably dates back to the arrival of the first English colonists. There are no vultures of any type in England, so these pioneers probably gave the common term "buzzard" to all the soaring figures above the New World.

Now you know!

We not only photograph beautiful wedding couples and cute children, but vultures too!

Had the wonderful job to photograph the Bourne Scallop Fest for our local chamber - The Canal Region Chamber. What a great event for all! If you haven't taken the opportunity to go to the Scallop Fest, put it in the list to do! It is always this weekend! The scallop dinner (a steal at $12) was so sweet and fresh! Get there early, as the lines do pile up! There is a huge craft fair and rides and amusements! It is a great way to spend a day! Enjoy!

Yesterday and into last night we had an amazing time with Laura and Ramsey! Their wedding day was just perfect and everything was flawless! The weather was perfect as was the bride! Her flowers were creatively created by Sue Hobart and did not disappoint! The Woods Hole Golf Club was amazing with the delicious food, impeccable service and the amazing view of Quissett Harbor with bonus sunset. The cake was created by the famous Lisa Raffael of Delicious Desserts and had an amazing coffee filing that got the guests talking! Wednesday night Sean and I headed out with the Canal Region Chamber for a cruise of the Cape Cod Canal. We had the perfect night and a great sunset. We cruised right under the train bride before it came down for a train to travel over it. The Chamber is a great group with many great places that they hold their meetings. The bonus was that I won a door prize- two round trip tickets to Nantucket on the Grey Lady!!! Wahoo Island bound!!!

Jodi and Gabriel's wedding yesterday was one of amazing color and love! Jodi walked down the isle in Gabriel's grandmother's dress, worn 75 years earlier! Amazing! They said their I do's under the great tree on the front lawn of Ocean Edge. This tree then made the perfect backdrop for the family portraits. We then headed to the beach for a great blue sky and breezy winds. The music was provided by Mike Hennessey which got people dancing all night long in the Bay Pines Pavilion. Congratulations to Jodi and Gabriel!

Saturday's perfect weather brought a most beautiful wedding at the property at the end of Shore Street in Falmouth! With the colorful flowers by Merideth Fancy in Orleans, the perfect Sperry Tent and the gorgeous tresses of the bride were created by Jacki Norri of Wedding Tresses. The meal was flawless by The Casual Gourmet and my pal Lisa from Delicious Desserts provided the simple but elegantly delicious cake. The guests danced the night away to the sounds of Mike Dumas and The Hollywood Horns! It had been a while since I had seen Mike Dumas but they still rock!!! It was truly a wonderful evening and I am so thankful that this June was much drier than the downpours of 2006! Congrats Todd and Kathryn!!!

We had an AMAZING day with Laurie and Larry yesterday! The weather was perfect and no details were left out with this wedding! Laurie looked gorgeous and Larry was very handsome! All of the animals cooperated and cheered (or moo'd) them on during the ceremony! Laurie and her girls arrived in two different horse drawn carriages and the groomsmen walked the couple's dogs down the isle. Bear the dog was the ring bearer as Buzz the sheep looked on. The horses grazed in the fields as they said their vows. The guests then went into the oversized tent for music by Cheryl Park. There was dancing and a lot of fun all night long!

Today's wedding is one that I have been looking forward to. I look forward to all of the weddings I do, but this one guarantees to be different. I ask all my couples to fill out a wedding info sheet so I can learn names and see who will be involved in their wedding. Bug's eye view. Set the camera down on the ground with the lens towards the sky and with a cable release photographed the backside of these daisies and ferns.....it's a bug's life!
WINDY DAY!!! The wind shook the flowers most of the morning shooting. So why not see what it looks like with the slower shutter speed. If you look at it long enough it looks like a horse running....(or maybe it's late and my eyes are tired!!!)

Back for the teaching of class two at the Green Briar Nature Center. My students brought in some of the images that they took last week and we talked about them. They did a really great job! Today we talked about composition and space in a photo. It was very cold and winy but here is what I got between talking to the class.....Enjoy!

Just back from a great wedding in Connecticut at the Simsbury Inn . Mike and Allison celebrated in style with all of their friends and relatives at the inn. It seemed that there were more Cape people at this wedding than we see at Cape weddings! How Fun!

We took photos at the spot where Mike and Allison originally met; Suffield Academy. The grounds were just right for photography. Very New England and lovely.

The rain held off and the cloud cover made for beautiful lighting! We stayed the night at the inn and traveled back on Sunday in great weather. This part of Connecticut is just beautiful and I hope to get back and spend more time! To see the entire event go to http://www.pictage.com/ ! Cheers!

Even though he has never seen any of the movies, Keegan is drawn to The Pirates of the Caribbean. It is amazing how just a little advertising that he sees, here and there, makes him aware of the merchandising blitz. He found this at the store last night and couldn't wait till Haloweeen! Photographing Wildflowers at Green Briar

We had my first class that I am teaching about wildflower photography at the Green Briar Nature Center here in Sandwich today. I have four very enthusiastic students that came ready with their camera and tripods! We explored light and the quality of light today. We went from very sunny skies and the use of a diffuser and then to over cast sky that was ideal for our subjects. They all have their assignments and I am looking forward to seeing their work at our next class next week. Enjoy and Happy Spring!

Wow! What a wonderful but a bit chilly wedding I had the honor to photograph on Saturday!
Stephanie and Mike were married on Sandy Neck beach surrounded by close family and friends who traveled from all over the country!
Their reception was held at The Dan'l Webster Inn here in Sandwich. All of the details were pulled together beautifully with the guidance of wedding planner Linda Garland of Cape Cod Wedding Designers. The flowers were great shades of pink and created by Lilacs. Tom Tuttle did a great job with the music and all enjoyed the cake made by Dottie Lovely-The Cake Lady! It truly was a wonderful day!! Enjoy!

Although these photos might not reflect it...the week at The New England Institute of Photography was an amazing learning experience!! I had the honor to study with the master in Studio Management Ann Monteith. What an experience! I am so excited to start this year's wedding and portrait season!!!

To smile is to feel joy in the simplicity of the moment. To smile is to open your eyes and soul to the world and say life isn't so bad right now, and at this moment, everything is okay.
The Pan-Massachusetts Challenge raises money for life-saving cancer research and treatment at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute through its Jimmy Fund. The main event of the fundraising effort is an annual bike-a-thon that crosses Massachusetts. Committed cyclists and volunteers as well as corporate sponsors and individual contributors are essential to the PMC meeting its goals. It also gives those involved in the event a chance to actively join the fight against cancer. I made a choice to ride the PMC this summer to help do my part in this fight. Cancer touches so many people and so many families, its hard to talk about it without someone having their own personal story. I'm riding the PMC for my hero, my uncle Geoff, who has always shown our family how to smile and laugh even through the worst of times, including his own struggle with cancer. Proud of the fact he's only missed two days of work since his diagnosis of stage 4 colon cancer, he has been living his life to the fullest, providing inspiration to all of those around him.

Their convention rocks this year with three full days of top notch photographers coming from around the country to share what they know! Speakers are Vickie Taufer "V Gallery - Unplugged" on Saturday, Lori Nordstrom "Passion with a Purpose" on Sunday and on Monday, David Jay "Weddings Creative Freedom. I am psyched! Not to mention that the convention in is the great city of Newport and the beautiful Hotel Viking!! A lot of my Cape photogs friends will be there so it is guaranteed a great time! Back Tuesday!

Last Chance for the Snow Man!

We finally got a little bit of snow this week, had only been waiting all winter for it. When I didn't have a child, I dreaded the snow on the Cape but now I look forward to getting some. Sledding, making snow men and snowball fights are some of the greatest childhood joys that someone living in New England can receive. As we tried out the hills at the local golf course, it was interesting to see that out of the large group that had assembled, Keegan was the only child. Many adults felt the wonders of the snow too and played hookie from work to sled!

Last week we took the family to Boston and stayed at the Seaport Hotel and visited the New England Aquarium and the Boston Museum of Science. Here are a few pics of the jelly fish exhibit at the Aquarium. SO cool and scary as some of these jellies were seen and felt off the shores of the Cape last summer.... enjoy!

We are so tired of the rain here! This past holiday weekend was a wash out! It did manage to bring some neat fog to the Cape and I found this wonderful scene down the street at Pilmico Pond. Just back from a trip to NYC. I always forget what a wonderful city it is! Went down to see Annie Leibovitz: A Photographer's Life, 1990–2005 at the Brooklyn Museum. Met my sister-in-law there and enjoyed a wonderful dinner at LesHalles and a super breakfast at Tom's in Brooklyn! We explored Times Square and wow has that changed since college visits! And of course we shopped!!! I now envy all my clients who get to enjoy the city full time! We are planning to make this an annual visit! How fun!

Just back from a great hike thru the Lowell Holly Reservation in Mashpee/ Sandwich. What a wonderful place to walk and see nature! Keegan and I completed our first geo cache there.
